Happy New Year!

We hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

We hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday!

Winter Break Tips

Do you have kids coming home from Winter Break  Make sure to have them read this blog so they know about some changes that might happen while they are home.

I was extremely excited to go home for winter break last year. Quality time with the family, no schoolwork, and holiday festivities were just a few of the things I was looking forward to.

What I didn't expect were the changes I would have to make to my lifestyle now that I was back living at home instead of in an apartment.

1. Money: When you were in high school, your parents may have footed the bill for things like gas, shopping, or eating out. Now that you're in college, your parents may be expecting you to pay for more of your personal expenses or to limit what you spend on nonessentials.

Being home for the holidays is great for a free meal or Target run here and there, but try not to take advantage of your parents—or their wallets.

2. Cars: Did your sibling inherit your car when you went away to school? This can create animosity when you're home for breaks, especially if both siblings have a fairly active social life.

Lay down some ground rules about who gets the car and when, and what will happen if both parties have a function at the same time.

3. Conduct: Certain habits that you may have picked up in college—such as messes, late night pizza orders, and use of profanity—simply won't fly now that you're home.

Keep in mind the company you're in now that you're home for break. Parents and younger siblings may not appreciate your inability to do laundry or stories about your college adventures. Keep this in mind before you pawn off your dirty clothes on Mom or dish to Dad about your craziest weekend of the semester.

San Diego Start Up Founder Gets National Attention

A survivor of reality television from San Diego will attend a real estate conference with elite members of the start up community.  Bill Lyons was a participate in ABC's Shark Tank.  This show included founders of start ups trying to get funding for their idea or business.  He did not make the finals, but his experience has led to his invitation to the Real Estate Connect contract.

Bill Lyons, a San Diego entrepreneur and recent reality TV survivor, will be part of a national real estate conference that will feature folks like the founder of Craigslist and the president and CEO of CitiMortgage.

Lyons, of Mission Hills, survived a swim in ABC's "Shark Tank" -- where aspiring start-up founders and inventors pitch their ideas and either get chewed out or funded. He didn't get funding, but it appears that experience hasn't stopped his business momentum. Lyons will join eight other young innovators at Real Estate Connect, a semi-annual get-together put on by leading industry publication Inman.

Lyons' start-up is Revestor, which promises to help investors find the best property deals with the highest returns. He describes it as a Zillow or Trulia for investors. Inman says Revestor and other companies featured in the panel are among the most promising start-ups that are using technology to make real estate deals easier, saving time and effort for not only real estate agents but also consumers.

"They're seamlessly synching your contacts, empowering you to create floor plans with your iPad, and giving neighborhoods letter grades based on local feedback, amenities and crime stats," Inman says.

The young entrepreneurs panel is just one of several events scheduled for Real Estate Connect, which runs from Jan. 16-18 in New York City.

Time to Get Up

It is getting darker earlier, and now it is even harder to get out of bed.  It is so tempting to just hit the snooze button as many times as possibly until your a half hour late for work.  If you are having the same winter wake up troubles as us, keep reading to find out some tips on tricks on ways to wake up.

winter wakeup 120312.jpgNow that winter's here, my reluctance to get out of bed in the morning has mounted exponentially. It's much easier to snuggle deep into the covers when my alarm goes off, and I'm constantly oversleeping when I know that I should get up. In an attempt to curb this bad habit, I've compiled some tips for making waking up a bit more manageable.

• Have a drink. Drinking water as soon as you wake up will help stimulate the body and help you stay awake. I always keep a glass of water on the nightstand, ready for that morning sip.

• Program the coffee maker. Relatedly, programming the coffee maker to go off so that coffee is ready for me in the morning is a big help. The sound of the grinding and the scent of the coffee are big pick-me-ups. If it's still too tough to rouse yourself for a cup, put the pot near your bed. There's nothing wrong with having a bit coffee in bed as long as you actually wake up to drink it and refuse the impulse to linger there for hours.

• Drink something before you sleep. By the time your alarm goes off, you will probably have to use the bathroom and won't be able to go back to sleep comfortably.

• Don't allow yourself to reason with yourself. This is probably my biggest wake-up mistake. I resolve the night before to wake up early, but of course, my groggy 6 a.m. brain tells me that it's better for me to get enough sleep or that the world will wait if I rest for five more minutes (which inevitably turns into forty-five). You can convince yourself of a hundred different reasons to stay in bed when you're still tired, even if it's not really the best course of action. Try to shut off all that "logic" and force yourself to make getting out of bed a physical, automatic routine. Train yourself to respond immediately to the alarm without relying on conscious willpower. This article suggests using daytime exercises to instill the habit of getting up right away.

• Have something to look forward to. It's much easier to get out of bed when you focus on something you actually want to do instead of on the drudgery of what you must do. Try setting aside a few minutes in the morning for a ritual that will help you look forward to waking up. Maybe it's coffee in bed, the time to flip through a design magazine, or a shower with a special soap. Or, if there's nothing ritualistic that strikes your fancy, try to think of a getting-up reward the night before. Maybe you want to read another chapter in that book you can't put down, or perhaps you want to treat yourself to a fancier-than-usual breakfast. Whatever it may be, try to give yourself something that will help you start the day right.

• If you wake up before your alarm goes off, get out of bed. If you go back to sleep or wait for the alarm, chances are, you'll feel drowsier. Follow your natural sleep cycles, seize the day, and embrace those extra minutes if your body tells you it's time to get up.

• Do something active. You may not have the time or energy for a full-blown exercise routine every morning, but get your body moving somehow. Bop around a bit more than usual while you get ready in the morning or add a few minutes of jogging in place to the routine. I take three minutes to dance to whatever pop tune is striking my fancy. (Today's was particularly good.) If you can't even muster the energy to get out of bed, just force yourself to wiggle around under the covers or tense and un-tense your muscles several times to get your body in gear.

• Take a shower as soon as you get out of bed. The water and change in temperature will get your circulation going. I also recommend a shower gel with mint or some other invigorating scent to help make you more alert. I've also heard of keeping a peppermint or lemon by your bedside to help facilitate the wake-up process through aromatherapy.

• Remind yourself of what you have to do. Fixing these things in your mind at night might make it harder to relax and get to sleep, so it can be helpful, both as nighttime catharsis and morning wake-up, to note your to-do list on a small whiteboard or a piece of paper kept on the nightstand. It will help you feel at night like you have those things handled, or at least noted, for the following day, and it will give you more reason to get up in the morning.

• If none of this works, there's the obvious tip of setting the alarm clock across the room.

Holidays in San Diego

It is the Holiday season and everyone is looking for activities to do with their families throughout the month.  Here are some great events that are happening all around San Diego this Holiday Season.   There are Christmas Lights, Ice Skating, and even Nutcracker Performances.

 December Nights in Balboa Park

Traditionally, the holiday season kicks off with a grand celebration in Balboa Park. Balboa Park December Nights is a two-day gift to the community that brings out the holiday spirit in all, this year taking place December 7 and 8, 2012. The beloved San Diego event features sparkling lights, theatrical and musical entertainment, and exotic Food/Spirits throughout the Park.

North Park Toyland Parade

Unwrap some magic this holiday season and take in the festive fun at the Annual North Park Toyland Parade & Holiday Fair, Saturday, November 29, 2012, starting at 11 a.m. Following the parade is the North ark Holiday Festival from noon to 3 p.m.

See Neighborhood Christmas Lights

Who doesn't love to see Christmas lights? Several neighborhoods around town put on annual displays (competitions?), but none more venerable than Christmas Circle in Chula Vista, a tradition for over 46 years. People come from all over San Diego to see the wonderful displays. You'll find Christmas Circle between First and Second Avenues, just south of H. Street and I

Take in Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo

For a wild twist to holiday festivities, take in the Zoo's annual Jungle Bells celebration. Starting Saturday, Dec. 15 through January 6 2013, families can put a wild-animal twist on familiar holiday traditions during the Zoo's 2012 Jungle Bells celebration. The Zoo will stay open until 8 p.m. each night except Dec. 24 - when it will close at 5 p.m. What kind of exotic animal gets its wings every time a jungle bell rings? Find out for yourself this month at the Jungle Bells celebration, when the San Diego Zoo is transformed into a magical winter wonderland. You'll find a nightly tree-lighting ceremony, bell ringers filling the air with music, and lighted animal figures dotting the grounds. Dr. Zoolittle has an interactive "Night before Christmas" show, and you can make some new friends during "Animal Magic for the Holidays" critter presentations. Munch holiday specialties, take a "Candy Cane Lane Magical Journey," and experience even more seasonal cheer—Zoo style!

Drive-Thru Christmas Lights

We San Diegans are notorious for using the drive-thru lanes, so why not to see Christmas lights at the Del Mar Fairgrounds' Holiday of Lights display? With more than 400 lighted and animated scenes, this 1.5-mile drive around the world-famous Del Mar Racetrack is sure to get everyone from ages 1 to 100 into the holiday spirit. With returning holiday favorites such as Toyland, Candy Cane Lane, Treasures by the Lake and Elves at Play, the 2012 holiday tradition continues with opening night on November 22 (Thanksgiving) and running through Tuesday, January 1, 2013 (closed on Mondays, November 26, December 3, and December 10).

Ice Skate Outdoors

It's our own version of the Rockefeller Center ice rink - the downtown ice rink at Horton Square is a perfect holiday setting, nestled between Horton Plaza and the NBC 7/39 TV studios (can you see the Rockefeller Center parallels?). Beginning Nov. 15 through Jan. 6, 2013, bring the family downtown, in the evening, so you can bundle up in stocking caps and mittens, pretend you're in Rockefeller Center and skate away. It's only $14/$12 and proceeds benefit Children's Hospital. In addition, the Hotel del Coronado offers ice skating by-the-sea with an outdoor ice rink overlooking the ocean through Jan. 5. And Viejas Outlet Center boasts San Diego's largest outdoor ice skating rink.

See Floating Christmas Lights on Parade

Now this is quintessential San Diego: the 2012 annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. On Dec. 9 and 16, 2012, 5:30 - 9 p.m., see over 80 boats, all decked out in lighted glory, cruise a 7.5 mile route on San Diego Bay. This year's theme is a "Our 41st Anniversary, USS Santa Claus" and it promises to be better than ever. Best vantage points from the shore are along the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Harbor Island and Coronado.

Take in the Holiday Bowl Big Balloon Parade

Speaking of parades...the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Parade at 10 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2012 is known for one thing: balloons. Dubbed "America's Largest Balloon Parade," more than 30 giant balloons will float down the one-mile route along the Embarcadero, along with bands, drill teams and more. It's the precursor to the evening's main event: the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium, one of college footballs most exciting and successful bowl games. After the parade, hit the Family Festival at the Broadway Pier.

Take in the Grinch

The Old Globe Theater production of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" has established itself as an annual holiday classic. The musical, directed by acclaimed director Jack O'Brien, brings to life the classic Dr. Seuss book with incredible sets and memorable performances. The 2012 production runs through Nov. 17 through Dec. 29.

See Sugar Plum Fairies

Of course, what's Christmas without the Nutcracker? And there is no shortage of performances of this venerable classic. This year, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet is proud to present the premiere of a totally revised Nutcracker. Performances will be held at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park on December 9-22, 2012.

Fall Decorating on a Dime

Even if it is still warm outside, changing over to fall decorations can help you get in the mood for the season.  Here are some great affordable ways to change over your summer decorations without spending and arm and a leg.

1. Switch out bed linens. As soon as the nighttime temperatures cooperate, ditch the summery coverlet for a heavier comforter or duvet. It's also a good time to turn your mattress, wash or replace any pillows that need it, and get your bed ready for snuggling down in colder weather. To save a few bucks, pick some cozy fall-hued fabrics, and make your own duvet! See our tips for more information: Tips for Sewing Your Own Duvet.
090512_diningroom.jpg
2. Consider switching out wall art. If you're like me and love to constantly rearrange artwork on your walls, make this a good time to try something new. I have lots of light, summery prints and illustrations that I'll trade out for a wall hanging--I have lots of quilts my grandmother made that would be perfect hanging over my mantle for the fall season. For a neat quilt-hanging idea, see How To: Hang a Quilt Artistically.

3. Add some candles--especially the fall-scented kind! Nothing says cozy like the glow and flicker of a flame; and for me, nothing says fall like apple pie and pumpkin scented candles in my living room and kitchen. It's an easy — and cheap — way to celebrate the scents of the season; I always pick out 5 or 6 little candles to kick off the first cool afternoon. Rather go a more DIY route? Check out 5 Simmer Pot Recipes To Make Your Home Smell Like Fall.

4. Rethink your throws and pillows for the sofa. I like to use some of my old quilts on the couch this time of year, and I'm also thinking about covering some of my throw pillows--maybe that worn out pair of corduroy pants would make a fantastic pillow cover! See How To: Sew an Envelope-Back Pillow Cover for ideas on making your own covers.

5. Ready your fireplace. If you use your wood-burning fireplace, give it a good clean and arrange some logs and kindling nearby. Or if you're like me, and have an unusable fireplace, give it a little glow of its own. Last year I arranged pumpkins and white lights; birch logs would also be nice! If you've also got a sealed-up fireplace, get some ideas with this post on Sprucing Up An Unused Fireplace.

6. Prepare doorways with a mud tray for boots. When the wet weather strikes — along with mud and lots of leaf litter — you'll be grateful you did! Here are seven boot trays to get you inspired: Practical to Pretty: 7 Boot Trays.

7. Speaking of doorways, try a new wreath — indoors or out! Use some bittersweet, or tuck leaves into a grapevine wreath. For some more ideas, see 5 DIY Ideas for Fall Wreaths.

8. Treat yourself to a new thermal mug and a fresh selection of teas. You could even make yourself a tea station, ready to go when the urge to indulge strikes. Need more direction in the tea department? Check out Tea Time: Everything You Need for a Perfect Cup.

9. Spruce up your table with some fall-hued table linens or fabrics. Dark, rich fabrics can add lots of warmth to the dining table. For inspiration, see our Table Linens for Fall Roundup.

10. Bring the outdoors in. I love to decorate with twigs and branches, and dried flowers from the end of summer. Bittersweet and chrysanthemums are also great ways to bring the fall colors indoors; for more ideas, see Setting the Autumn Table with Plants.

Closet Organizational Solutions

Organizing your closet is something no one wants to take on.  This is why closets usually are the last things to get cleaned and organized.  However, we have some easy tips on how to organize your closet and save space.

Hanging jewelry organizers

If you rush to find the outfit-completing bracelet or necklace every morning, consider a new jewelry organization system. A hanging organizer will keep you from digging through a cluttered box in the last fleeting morning moments. Choose a product that has a soft vinyl lining to protect your accessories from getting scratched.

Purse rack

An over-the-door hanging rack is a good way to keep track of your handbag inventory and clear some space on sought-after shelves. The simple design is complete with adjustable hooks so you can organize your purses however you like -- by color, brand or season.

Vinyl storage bags

If you have items in your closet that you don't use on a daily basis, store them together in a vinyl bag. Fold towels, sweaters and extra linens neatly into multiple bags and then stack them on top of one another, freeing space for the items you use more often.

Revolving shoe stand

This takes up less space than your typical shoe rack, and the spinning motion makes sorting through your heels, sneakers and flip flops easier when you're rushing to get out the door.

Decorative crates

Get creative with your organization project by picking boxes in bright hues, fun patterns or chic designs. For a stylish and eco-friendly approach, try stackable crates made from bamboo.

Cascading hangers

If you just can't part with seldom-worn clothes but still need extra space, buy a set of cascading hangers. They're perfect for hanging multiple shirts, sweaters, blouses or slacks in a tight spot and are made with a non-slip grip so you won't have to dust your clothes off of the floor.

Island organizer

A storage island is a good option for more spacious closets. It's similar to the kitchen island but a little smaller and with more nooks and crannies for storing your belongings. It also can serve as a fabulous decorative piece!

Stacking shelves

They're relatively cheap and add extra storage space. Stack several pieces for an easy-to-reach shoe rack, or put a single row on an existing shelf to double up available areas.

Drawer organizers

Perfect for keeping lingerie, undergarments and hosiery in order, drawer organizers can be stacked on top of each other on a closet shelf to save space. Each organizer is conveniently broken down into smaller sections so you can organize smaller garments easily.

Americans Compete Against Each Other in the Olympics

Americans winning gold in any event is a big deal.  However, when two American teams go up against each other for an Olympic Gold that is something that has never happened.  However, in the sport of beach volleyball that is exactly what is happening today at 4pm.

Wednesday’s gold medal, women’s beach volleyball match is historic before it even starts.

The 4 p.m. ET showdown between the teams of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings and Jennifer Kessy and April Ross marks the first time that an Olympic final has pitted one American duo against another.

If May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings triumph, they’ll become the sport’s first team to win gold medals in three consecutive Olympics and secure their status as the greatest of all time.

If underdogs Kessy and Ross upset the legends, they’ll become America’s -- and perhaps the world’s – new top team.

No matter the result, the match will illustrate America’s continued dominance in the sport, which was born on the sands of Southern California and became an Olympic sport in 1996. Since then, U.S. teams have won five of eight gold medals in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Expect an inordinate amount of “USA!” chants on the makeshift beach at London’s Horse Guards Parade.
Heading into the Olympics, Mary-Treanor/Walsh Jennings were ranked third in the world, and beat the number-two team, Zhang Xi/Xue Chen of China in straight sets to reach the gold-medal match. Kessy/Ross were ranked fourth, and beat the top-seeded team, Larissa Franca and Juliana Fellberta Silva of Brazil, in a comeback thriller.

The Brazilians won the bronze medal match in three sets over the Chinese early Wednesday.
When the gold-medal match concludes, it will mark the end of an era. May-Treanor plans to retire afterward, breaking up an 11-year partnership and leaving Walsh Jennings, a mother of two, looking for another teammate.

Perhaps she has more history-making in her.
